Our Mission
Our goal is to increase your student’s understanding and confidence in math by providing personalized instruction while striving to be both flexible and accessible in order to meet your needs as a family who wants the best for their child. Our Story
T2 Thompson Tutoring began in 2010 a few years after I graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with a degree in Economics. I saw an ad for SAT math tutors which noted that the applicant needed to be able to score at least a 700 on the math portion of the SAT. I had scored a 790 on my math SAT in high school and enjoyed helping students, so I responded to this ad, figuring it would be a good use of my abilities, little did I know that this would trigger a new career and business aiming to help students grow and excel in math.
Once again I scored a 790 on the entrance test (I’m still curious as to the one problem I missed), did well on the interview, underwent extensive training and began working for a large, international tutoring franchise. While I enjoyed the aspect of helping students, the setting was not ideal as the company gave me little lesson plan flexibility, had students come to their center in a strip mall where the lessons were conducted in cubicles, did “individual tutoring” which consisted of rotating between up to three students at a time, and I was rarely able to develop consistency with the students I was tutoring. Nearly half of the time I wasn’t even tutoring math but the reading and writing parts of the SAT or even other school subjects, none of which I felt comfortable with.
I thought there had to be a better way to help students.
This is how T2 Thompson Tutoring came about. I set out on my own and began tutoring students of different ages and backgrounds in math, individually, at their homes where I had the flexibility to adjust instruction as I saw fit while building relationships. In the beginning I mostly worked with students in the areas north of Charlotte such as Concord, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson. In fact, I still work with my first ever student as he has grown from a shy, struggling fifth grader to a confident high school student earning A’s each term in algebra. It was great to be around such caring families and parents that had a genuine concern for their children’s academic growth, it has helped me in my parenting as well. The relationships that can be built with families is still one of the aspects I enjoy most about tutoring. While still continuing to tutor I also ventured into teaching and was able to teach math at both public and private schools. Despite a successful record of high test scores I felt confined by the restrictions of the classroom and realized I was much more comfortable working with students in a smaller setting.
As my tutoring schedule filled up I often felt spread too thin and not able to meet all of my students as much as they needed. So in 2014 I decided to expand my business by hiring other tutors, all with the highest mathematical abilities, training them extensively, and pairing them with students that they can connect well with all over the Charlotte metro area. Today, each student that works with a T2 Thompson Tutoring tutor (try saying that 5 times fast) gets the same level of math expertise and commitment to their growth that my first student received when I started out. As a small, locally owned and operated company we offer distinct advantages that larger franchises and learning centers cannot. I hope we can help your child achieve the same level of success and confidence that many others have found. I look forward to connecting with you and discussing the possibilities for your student.
Sincerely,
Mike Thompson
